PROTECTING CORPORATE ART COLLECTIONS

Preserving collections and optimizing space in a downtown highrise

Banks and other businesses collect fine art for a variety of reasons: some collect and display art to inspire employees and encourage them to think creatively. Others purchase art to support emerging artists and enhance the firm’s public image. Many firms allow executives to select works for display in their offices as a prestigious perk. These works of art are typically rotated among various corporate locations and are kept in storage when not on display. This can create storage challenges because the firms often occupy expensive real estate, yet they need museum-quality storage equipment to protect their investment in fine art.

The leadership team of this Canadian bank wanted to store the bank’s collection of framed and three-dimensional art in a secure, climate-controlled area in its Toronto headquarters. They wanted to store the art as compactly as possible to make the most of the highrise building’s expensive square footage, but they also wanted the area to be attractive and easily accessible for executives and others to view the works. In addition, staff needed a work area that would allow them to clean and prepare artworks for display, as well as package them for shipping or long-term storage. The local Spacesaver consultant collaborated with staff to create a complete solution that saves space and creates a pleasant and efficient collections care area. The space consists of art racks for hanging framed pieces, shelving for three-dimensional objects, and a museum cabinet that doubles as a work surface. To optimize space and keep hanging art accessible and organized, the art racks are nested on a high-density carriage-and-rail system. The Viking cabinet has lift-off doors, three large drawers, a counter-height work surface, and casters to allow staff to easily move the cabinet as required.
